State Senator Appointed to Boardroom Bound® Board
June 21, 2004, Washington, D.C. Boardroom Bound®, a Washington,
D.C.-based nonprofit organization that helps companies find pre-qualified
candidates for corporate board services elected Wayne Ward Ford
to its governance board. “We are very fortunate to have
Wayne join us since he plays an important role in the political
arena and has a background quite different from the majority of
those currently in board service,” says Linda Bolliger,
Boardroom Bound’s Founder and CEO.
Ford was in the eighth grade when his teacher asked his class
to write their obituaries. “How would they like to be remembered,”
she asked. Ford who lived in a rough area of Washington, D.C.,
wrote that he would make his mark in the Mid-west. He would be
active in politics and in charge of a community center.
Today, Ford is living the dream he had as a boy: He’s the
only black member of the Iowa State Legislature and the founder
and executive director of Urban Dreams, a nonprofit community
program empowering the urban poor. Along with Mary Campos, a prominent
member of the Des Moines Latino community, Ford founded the Brown
and Black Forum in 1984 and this year their group hosted Iowa’s
Brown and Black Presidential Forum, which was broadcast by MSNBC
January 11th.
Ford’s dream was re-visited by Dan Rather in his 2001 book
entitled: The American Dream: Stories From the Heart of Our
Nation. “As much of my dream as I’ve achieved,
I had never realized that corporate board service could be part
of it until I met the Boardroom Bound people,” Ford says.
“So, I am very pleased to have this opportunity to help
diversify the boardroom,” he adds.
